Potlatch and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Certification

By 2005, we became the first major, publicly traded forest products company in North America to receive certification of its forestry practices under the strict standards of the Forest Stewardship Council. Today, working with such third-party auditors as Bureau Veritas, we seek certification of new timberland we acquire. Additionally, we have received FSC chain-of-custody certification for our lumber and plywood mills that produce FSC-certified products.

Third-party certification of our forest management and manufacturing practices is important for several reasons. First, it provides credible, independent verification. Further, it ensures that our practices meet a set of specific and meaningful values. And finally, certification provides a clear process for continually improving all of our practices.

FSC certification is the gold standard. The FSC's stringent social, economic, and environmental criteria are considered the most far-reaching and the most effective for fostering responsible forest management. As a result, FSC standards have been endorsed by many environmental and nongovernmental organizations. Similarly, FSC-certified wood products are increasingly favored by commercial builders and developers because using FSC-labeled wood helps in attaining LEED status from the U.S. Green Building Council.
